Note Hong Kong Education Department instituted the Joint Primary 6 Examination in 1949. Only those candidates who passed the Examination with good grades were admitted to government or grant-in-aid secondary schools. In 1962, the Secondary School Entrance Examination (SSEE) was held to substitute the Joint Primary 6 Examination. It was a selective examination for primary six leavers to determine whether they could proceed to secondary schools. With the implementation of nine years of free education, the Secondary School Places Allocation System was introduced in 1978 to replace the SSEE. Under the new system, no examination was required and every student could be allocated a secondary school place.
